The one-year Breast Fellowship Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center accepts two trainees annually.
The program is designed to prepare the trainee for a leadership role in multidisciplinary breast care in an academic or community setting.
The Breast Fellowship Program is approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology.
The one-year Breast Fellowship Program accepts two trainees annually and accepted its first fellow in 2004. The program is designed to prepare the trainee for a leadership role in multidisciplinary breast care in an academic or community setting. Trainees will participate in a multidisciplinary breast evaluation clinic and rotate on breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology and reconstructive surgery, among others. A rotation with a nationally recognized breast cancer risk assessment and management program will also provide the trainee with a superior understanding of genetics and risk counseling. Extensive exposure to both dedicated cancer and benign breast clinics prepares the fellow for the myriad of routine situations typically seen in practice, as well as complex cases more commonly encountered at quaternary referral centers.
Fellows are expected to complete at least one original academic project to submit for national presentation and one other project which may include a review article or book chapter. Resources to assist in academic work include clinical breast cancer databases and a biospecimen repository.
Prerequisite Training: The Fellowship is offered to candidates who are board-eligible in General Surgery. Prospective candidates from the United States must have successfully completed a residency in general surgery. Applicants from other countries must have passed the USMLE Steps I, II, & III or FLEX, FMGEMS, and TOEFL exams and must be able to secure an unrestricted Pennsylvania Medical License.
Fox Chase Cancer Center is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
The Center includes a 100-bed hospital devoted entirely to cancer patients, an outpatient center which includes a facility for clinical cancer prevention and research, one of the oldest and most nationally recognized high-risk programs in the country, and the Institute for Cancer Research. The Women’s Cancer facility enclosed within the Center’s clinical outpatient building opened in March 2010. Fox Chase has a residency in radiation oncology and approved fellowship programs in medical oncology, urologic oncology, gynecologic oncology, thoracic oncology, pathology, head and neck oncology, microsurgery/plastics, palliative care, and a complex general surgical oncology. Residents from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University also rotate at the Center, along with residents from other regional institutions.
Members of the Center are active participants in multiple clinical trials groups, and the fellow will participate in recruitment and follow up of trial subjects. Didactic teaching on topics of current interest occurs at a regular monthly multidisciplinary educational conference.
