Trainees Per Year: 1

The one-year Breast Imaging Fellowship Program accepts one trainee annually. The program is designed to prepare the trainee for a leadership role in multimodality breast imaging in an academic or community setting.

Overview

The Fellow will be an essential member of our team. They will devote 9 months to interpreting screening and diagnostic 3-D digital mammograms, breast ultrasounds, breast MRI studies, and Molecular Breast Imaging studies in the setting of a dedicated cancer hospital, gaining experience with our Transpara AI software for mammography. The fellow will also perform tomosynthesis-guided stereotactic biopsies, ultrasound-guided biopsies, MRI-guided biopsies, and wire/wire-free pre-operative localizations under the supervision of our experienced faculty. They will learn all aspects of running a breast imaging center, develop a deep understanding of MQSA directives, and participate in operational leadership meetings. Additional fellowship duties include performing second-opinion reviews; presenting in weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board; leading didactic conferences; and teaching residents.

The fellow will spend a total of one week in each of the following nationally recognized subspecialty departments at Fox Chase Cancer Center: surgical oncology, medical oncology, pathology, genetics/high risk clinic, radiation oncology, and plastic surgery. They will also have partial rotations through our affiliate hospitals located in the vicinity of Fox Chase.

They will dedicate at least two weeks to scholarly activity, including research or a customized fellow project. Additional scholarly time is probable upon request. Resources accessible to assist in academic pursuits include an extensive case volume of malignant breast disease and a robust biospecimen repository.

Vacation and On-Call Duties

The Breast Imaging Fellow will have 4 weeks of paid vacation.

We ask that our fellow participate in Abdominal Imaging call every 6th weekend and 1 holiday per year. Coverage is performed remotely and includes studies from Jeanes Hospital, a community hospital that shares our Burholme campus. Duty hours are 7 am – 4 pm Saturday and 7 am – 4 pm Sunday, with night hawk providing coverage after 4 pm on both days. Daily volumes are approximately 60 cases per shift, consisting of CT, ultrasound, and plain films. The fellow will be provided with one day off the following week to allow for rest and/or additional academic time.
