Hidden geometry of our lives: looping, zigzagging, or leaping forward - finding our paths amid chaos
Marcin Chwistek, MD, is a pain and palliative medicine physician in the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.  He is also an Associate Editor at the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, a member of Faculty Opinions, and a volunteer physician working to improve palliative care in the post-Soviet states. In his clinical practice, Marcin takes care of patients with advanced cancer focusing on control of their symptoms and assisting patients and their caregivers with decision-making that aligns with their preferences and wishes. His professional career has been rooted in the desire to understand and explore how a serious illness shapes our lives, relationships, and sense of ourselves. He is fascinated by how recent discoveries from diverse fields of social sciences, evolutionary medicine, and neuroscience shape our understanding of the human condition. He is passionate about ways to translate them into medical care that is deeply human, connected, supported by technology, and available to everyone. In his seminar, Marcin will talk about his meandering professional journey from a medical student in Krakow, Poland, to a palliative care physician in the US. LinkedIn

What do I want to be when I grow up? Still figuring it out
Josh Meyer, MD is a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. He is known nationally and internationally for work on colorectal and anal as well as esophageal cancers. During his presentation, Josh will try to give a sense of the types of experiences and decisions that have allowed him to do what he does every day at Fox Chase as a radiation oncologist who treats patients, a translational researcher who studies the genetics of colorectal cancer, and an educator of junior clinicians and medical students. Rosie grew up thinking that to follow her professional interests she had to decide between two pathways: a medical degree, if she wanted to work with patients, or a PhD, if she wanted to pursue research. She found out, however, that there were way more options. Throughout her career, she has applied her passion for learning, asking questions, and solving problems to explore unusual avenues of cancer biology and to mentor others in critical research-related skills.
