PHILADELPHIA (December 3, 2024) The Department of Clinical Genetics at Fox Chase Cancer Center is pleased to announce that genetic counseling, a service that helps individuals and families understand inherited health risks, and clinical services for those considered at high risk for breast cancer are now offered at Temple Health - Chestnut Hill Hospital.

“We have had genetic counseling available for patients at Fox Chase for over 20 years and we look forward to expanding our services to the Chestnut Hill community,” said Corinne Zrada, MS, LCGC, a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor. “Genetic counseling is essential for individuals with a personal or family history of cancer to assess their risks and make informed decisions about their health.”

The expansion of genetic counseling services to Chestnut Hill Hospital, which is located at 8835 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, allows individuals with a personal or family history of cancer to assess their risk. During genetic counseling appointments, patients will meet with a licensed genetic counselor to review their medical and family history. These weekly clinics will be held every Wednesday and Thursday.

In addition, Chestnut Hill will offer genetic testing and explanations of the results in follow-up appointments. Genetic testing analyzes DNA from a blood or saliva sample to detect changes or mutations that may increase a person’s risk for cancer. Understanding genetic risks allows patients to take steps to lower their chances of developing cancer or detecting it early.

The services at Chestnut Hill will be provided by an expert team, including Zrada; Dylane Wineland, MS, LCGC, a licensed genetic counselor; and Devora Schapiro, MSPAS, PA-C, a licensed physician assistant who will be offering clinical services for those considered to be at high risk for breast cancer.

This expansion aligns with the mission of the Department of Clinical Genetics, which is to provide genetic counseling and high-risk clinical services to individuals at an increased risk for cancer, furthering the goal of cancer prevention.
