Fox Chase Cancer Center Team Walks ‘Miles for Melanoma’

Miles for Melanoma
Miles for Melanoma is a nationwide series of 5K events that brings together local communities to support melanoma patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Members of the Fox Chase Cancer Center community—physicians, staff, patients, and their loved ones—went the extra mile, quite literally, at the 2024 Miles for Melanoma Philadelphia 5K Run/Walk.

Held late this August at the Philadelphia Zoo, the event raised a total of more than $106,000 to support melanoma research, education, and advocacy through the Melanoma Research Foundation. Fox Chase was proud to be a 2024 Local Presenting Sponsor.

“By advocating for cancer awareness in our community and engaging in fundraising efforts for cancer research, we are bringing our mission of prevailing over cancer to even more people who can benefit,” said Jeffrey Farma, MD, FACS, Chair, Department of Surgery and Surgical Director, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program at Fox Chase, who served as captain of the Fox Chase team. “It was encouraging to see so much support for this event from so many Fox Chase staff members and friends who inspire us with their courage and dedication.”

In addition to participation in the run/walk by team members, Fox Chase staffed a table with information and giveaways and provided free skin screenings to event attendees.

“Melanoma is known as the deadliest and fastest-growing form of skin cancer,” noted Fox Chase dermatologist Alina Shevchenko, MD, who saw dozens of people at Miles for Melanoma for skin screenings. “Being proactive is so important for prevention and early detection. This includes exercising healthy habits when it comes to sun exposure as well as getting regular skin screenings.”

Miles for Melanoma is a nationwide series of 5K events that brings together local communities to support melanoma patients, survivors, and caregivers. Events take place in cities and towns across the country throughout the year.
