PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 2024) — The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) released its list of the 2024 Top Physicians Under 40 today. Two Fox Chase Cancer Center doctors were honored:
- Eric M. Ghiraldi, DO, Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology;
- Zachary Frosch, MD, MSHP, Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematology/Oncology.
To be eligible for the award, physicians must practice in Pennsylvania, be under the age of 40, and be nominated by a colleague. Winners were selected by a committee of PAMED members.
“Our committee really had to work through a lot of great nominations this year, but these candidates stood out among the rest,” said Lynn Lucas-Fehm, MD, JD, PAMED President-Elect and Chair of the awards committee. “The future of medicine will shine bright with their passion for patient care and innovative ideas that will shape the future of medicine.”
Below are excerpts from the nominations for each Fox Chase honoree:
Zachary Frosch, MD, MSHP
“Dr. Frosch’s work fills a critical gap in the literature on equitable access to cellular therapy for patients with blood cancers. His recently published paper, ‘Willingness to Travel for Cellular Therapy: The Influence of Follow-Up Care Location, Oncologist Continuity, and Race’ in JCO Oncology Practice suggested that both travel time and lack of oncologist continuity represented particular barriers to receipt of cellular therapy for Black patients. He has used this data to generate a prospective study to evaluate methods to improve access and has received the 2022 NCCN Young Investigator Award to support this work,” read his nomination.
“His work will almost certainly lead to interventions that will improve access to care for previously underserved groups. Additionally, he is a superb clinician who is dedicated to his patients and to advancing treatments for hematologic malignancies.”
Eric M. Ghiraldi, DO
“Dr. Eric M. Ghiraldi embodies the spirit of a truly patient-centric physician. Not content to simply build a successful clinical practice, he has dedicated himself to mastering complex laser techniques that give men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia new hope. His proficiency in demanding procedures like HoLEP and ThuLEP fills a vital need, allowing patients to find relief where previous options may have fallen short,” read his nomination.
“Medicine requires sacrifice and a vocational dedication to healing. Dr. Eric M. Ghiraldi lives these values through an incredible work ethic grounded in care for others. By tirelessly striving for progress in all he does, he inspires me to shine a light on his profound contributions that better our community.”
