PHILADELPHIA (September 26, 2016) – Fox Chase Cancer Center doctors will provide free rapid skin cancer screening in the Mobile Screening Unit at the 2016 Miles for Melanoma Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016.
The screenings will be available from 7 am until 9 am. Individuals seeking a full-body exam will be seen in the Mobile Screening Unit to ensure privacy; all other spot check examinations will be conducted in the Fox Chase tent. The unit, supported by the Flyers Wives Charities, enables Fox Chase to reach communities throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, according to Evelyn González, senior director of community outreach for Fox Chase.
Faculty and staff, volunteers, patients, survivors, and their families will come together as members of the Fox Chase Cancer Center team at the 2016 Miles for Melanoma Philadelphia. This family-friendly 5K run/walk, which will take place at the Philadelphia Zoo, helps raise funds to support research, education, and advocacy for melanoma through the Melanoma Research Foundation. The 5K run/walk starts at 8 am. Participants who join the Fox Chase team will receive a free T-shirt.
“Fox Chase is excited to participate again in Miles for Melanoma Philadelphia to support the Melanoma Research Foundation’s efforts to find effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma,” said Jeffrey M. Farma, MD, associate professor of surgical oncology and codirector of the Melanoma Program at Fox Chase. “We at Fox Chase are so proud to join with others to take part in this significant effort.”
“We are pleased that Fox Chase is again supporting the Melanoma Research Foundation’s efforts to raise funds for additional research for new and better treatment options,” said Tim Turnham, executive director of the Melanoma Research Foundation. “Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer, and education is important to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of melanoma.”
