Fox Chase Well Represented at AUA Conference
-
Multiple Fox Chase Cancer Center faculty members recently presented at the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting in San Diego in May. In total, more than 20 abstracts and presentations were made by the faculty, residents and fellows.
Most notably, Richard Greenberg, Chief of Urologic Oncology at Fox Chase, received the 2016 AUA Residents Committee Teaching Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding Urology educator or program director who has dedicated a portion of his/her career to teaching residents. A moving tribute to Dr. Greenberg’s contribution to the education of countless Temple residents and Fox Chase Urologic Oncology fellows was made by Temple resident Daniel Parker in front of more than 20 Temple and Fox Chase alumni and faculty who were in attendance.
Additionally, Robert Uzzo, chair of surgical oncology at Fox Chase, raised the question and led the discussion on whether the time has come for the “radiographic biopsy” for the diagnosis of kidney cancer. He indicated that as the field develops, doctors will be better able to make the most out of the data generated from MRI and CT scans; leave less data and information on the table; and make better decisions. David Chen led a plenary discussion on endoscopic management of high grade upper tract urothelial carcinoma in a solitary kidney, Marc Smaldone lectured in a new course examining the role of prostate cancer genomic testing, and Alexander Kutikov spoke at the Association Francaise d' Urologie and Russian Urological society meetings.
PODIUM Presentations:
Differences in Overall Survival for Patients with Stage I-II Renal Cell Carcinoma Treated with Partial or Radical Nephrectomy (presented by Benjamin Ristau, MD)
African American Race is Not Associated with Post-Operative Complications Following Urologic Oncology Procedures in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (presented by Daniel Parker, MD)
Patients Who Maintain Normal Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) Despite Coronary Artery Disease Appear Resistant to Marked GFR Decline Following Radical Nephrectomy (presented by Daniel Parker, MD)
Relationship of Post-operative Chronic Kidney Disease Subtype Status and Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Renal Surgery (presented by Michael Haiffler, MD)

Examination of perioperative outcomes following partial nephrectomy performed on patients remaining on antiplatelet therapy (presented by Timothy Ito, MD)
POSTER Presentations:
Poster presentations by the residents and fellows examined wide range of topics, including contemporary trends of systemic therapy use in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma, the association between hospital and surgeon volume and mortality in patients undergoing radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, defining deliverables for MRI-guided prostate biopsy, and the association between PD-1 expression and cancer specific survival for patient’s with clear cell renal cell carcinoma.
Additionally, Benjamin Ristau, Nikhil Waingankar, MD, Mohammed Haseebuddin, MD, and Miki Haiffler, MD, all members of Fox Chase’s Urologic Oncology Fellowship program, provided coverage of the conference for UroToday, an online publication that focuses on genitourinary topics. Fox Chase fellows contributed 23 articles about the various presentations from the conference.
“I am thrilled to see this level of participation from Fox Chase at this year’s AUA annual meeting,” Dr. Uzzo said. “It’s important for us to gather with and learn from other experts in the field as we work to provide our patients with the best possible treatment and care.”
