Fox Chase Took Charge at Miles for Melanoma 2015

  • Joining the likes of elephants, bears, alligators and tigers, Fox Chase Cancer Center faculty, staff and patients took charge at the Philadelphia Zoo on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at the first annual Miles for Melanoma 5K. The event was sponsored by the Melanoma Research Foundation.

As captain of our team, I couldn’t have been more proud of the accomplishments we made together (Flickr photo album).

Fox Chase was well represented at Miles for Melanoma!

This was the first year that the Melanoma Research Foundation brought the Miles for Melanoma event to Philadelphia.  As one of the larger Melanoma programs in the region, the faculty at Fox Chase felt it was very important to participate in this event.  The event was brought to my attention through social media as one of my melanoma patients, Carla Rake, had created a team for the event.

I am pleased to share that for our first year, the Fox Chase team had an amazing showing at the Zoo with more than 65 physicians, staff, family members and patients all sporting Fox Chase t-shirts!

The 5K race took runners and walkers through the Philadelphia Zoo. We collaborated with the Fox Chase Cancer Center/Temple Health Community Cancer Screening Program and had our Mobile Screening Unit at the event to provide on-site skin examinations, melanoma screening literature and sun screen. Joining me to conduct the screenings were my colleagues Eric Chang, Jill Seely, Sanjay Reddy, Ashley Hardy, Adaobi Nwaneshiudu. Together we examined 47 patients.

More importantly, we were able to interact with other families and patients of Fox Chase at the event. It was a truly rewarding experience and we look forward to increased participation in the coming years.

Our team raised over $5,000 for the Melanoma Research Foundation!

We look forward to building our collaboration with Miles for Melanoma on future research and outreach projects. I’m excited for an even bigger turn out in 2016 and hope you can join us!
