BOSTON, MA (October 28, 2012)—Not all women diagnosed with operable breast cancer present with a single tumor; some have multifocal disease appear in the breast, which means multiple tumors found in the same breast quadrant, while others have multicentric disease, where multiple tumors are found in separate breast quadrants. Multifocal or multicentric disease is not a standard indication to receive radiation after mastectomy.

BOSTON, MA (October 28, 2012)—Men whose testosterone drops following radiation therapy for prostate cancer are more likely to experience a change in PSA levels that signals their cancer has returned, according to new research from Fox Chase Cancer Center. The findings will be presented on October 29 at the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s 54th Annual Meeting.

PHILADELPHIA (October 9, 2012)—Come join Lindsay Fullerton, 12-year-old cancer advocate, and her dog pal Schuylkill at Fox Chase Cancer Center’s annual charity dog walk—Paws for the Cause—as they walk to raise funds to support the effort to prevail over cancer. The event takes place Sunday, October 21, at 10:30 a.m. (registration at 9:30 a.m.) on Fox Chase’s Northeast Philadelphia campus (333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia).

PHILADELPHIA (October 5, 2012)—BJ’s Wholesale Club will be hosting a FREE Pink Picnic for the community on Wednesday, October 10 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at its Conshohocken location (300 Alan Wood Road). Those attending the event will hear from Fox Chase Cancer Center medical oncologist Paula Ryan, MD, PhD, about advances in breast cancer screening, treatment and prevention. Local breast cancer survivor Sonia Smith will also share her cancer experience.

PHILADELPHIA (September 28, 2012)—Fox Chase Cancer Center has been selected by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC)—the leading national multidisciplinary organization that sets the standard for quality care for patients with cancer—to receive a 2012 ACCC Innovator Award, sponsored by GE Healthcare.  The award, which will be given at the ACCC 29th National Oncology Conference in early October, honors ACCC-member cancer programs that have exhibited forward-thinking strategic planning and developed pioneering programs and replicable models.

PHILADELPHIA (September 20, 2012)—Temple University School of Medicine and Fox Chase Cancer Center will hold the first Temple Biomedical Research Day on Friday, September 21, 2012 to showcase research and programs at both institutions. A cadre of Temple and Fox Chase researchers will receive awards and give presentations, while more than 150 postdoctoral researchers and graduate students will fill a building lobby with poster displays of their research.

PHILADELPHIA (September 20, 2012)—The Tyanna Foundation, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of breast cancer patients, is hosting the third annual BreastFest Philly on Saturday, September 29 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Mad River Bar & Grille (4100 Main Street in Manayunk). BreastFest is the foundation’s flagship event and has raised over one million dollars for breast cancer awareness, research, services, education, treatment and patient care.

PHILADELPHIA (August 2, 2012)—The Risk Assessment Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center, part of the Center’s Department of Clinical Genetics, has a new educational website available to help patients understand the personal and family risk factors that may put them at higher risk for cancer. By utilizing the website, patients and their family members can learn about their risk factors and what they can do to lower their chances of getting cancer.
