Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) has a well-established tobacco treatment program (TTP) for patients and the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement has adapted this program for the community. To reduce barriers to participation among medically underserved groups most affected by tobacco use and lung cancer burden, FCCC offers the comprehensive cessation services and social support to community members, at community sites, free of charge. This program is also held virtually. This 4-week smoking cessation program is delivered by a health educator with a National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP) and a Certified Nurse Practitioner. Participants learn about: nicotine addiction, coping mechanisms, smoking triggers, and strategies to quit and stay smoke free. Participants are educated on nicotine replacement therapies and meet with a FCCC Nurse Practitioner to discuss their best treatment option.
The goals of this program are:
- Approach quitting as a step-by-step process, not one big event.
- Learn how to anticipate cues and triggers that lead to smoking and relapse.
- Develop problem solving and coping skills to deal with difficult situations.
- Clarify myths and facts about nicotine replacement therapy.
