PHILADELPHIA (February 13, 2023)—Scientists have long known that leukemia cells accumulate a great deal of spontaneous DNA damage, far more than normal blood cells. Unfortunately, these cancer cells also have an uncanny ability to repair DNA damage and survive, so they can continue spreading throughout the body.

PHILADELPHIA (February 8, 2023)—Researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center were recently awarded a $550,000 grant from Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) to fund a new project, “Accelerating and Diversifying Access to Clinical Trials.”

PHILADELPHIA (February 7, 2023)—Fox Chase Cancer Center has formed a new Department of Urology that will be chaired by Alexander Kutikov, MD, FACS, who is the Roberta R. Scheller Chair in Urologic Oncology at Fox Chase. Jay Simhan, MD, FACS, professor and director of Reconstructive Urology, will be the department vice chair. Kristen Ragusa will be the new department’s lead administrator.

PHILADELPHIA (February 7, 2023)—Cihangir Duy, PhD, MS, an assistant professor in the Nuclear Dynamics and Cancer research program and a member of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute at Fox Chase Cancer Center, has been awarded an American Society of Hematology (ASH) 2023 Junior Faculty Scholar Award in basic/translational research.

PHILADELPHIA (February 3, 2023)—Jaye Gardiner, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at Fox Chase Cancer Center, has received the Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00) award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. She will receive up to two years of postdoctoral funding, followed by three years of funding after she secures a full-time faculty position.

PHILADELPHIA (February 2, 2023)—Protective clothing and other safeguards for those who work with asbestos have significantly reduced deaths from mesothelioma over the past decades. But what if it was also possible to protect people at high risk from the inside out? That’s the goal of a recent study at Fox Chase Cancer Center looking at a new drug candidate intended to delay or prevent the onset of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, after asbestos exposure.

PHILADELPHIA (January 31, 2023)—Fox Chase Cancer Center has been awarded Gold Certification for Excellence in Person-Centered Care by Planetree International, which recognizes Fox Chase’s achievement and innovation in the delivery of person-centered care. Fox Chase is one of only 98 healthcare organizations worldwide to earn this prestigious award, and only one of four organizations that focus on cancer care to be honored.

PHILADELPHIA (January 23, 2023)—Fox Chase Cancer Center has achieved Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for the sixth consecutive time. Fox Chase has held Magnet status continuously since 2000, when it became the first hospital in Pennsylvania and the first specialty hospital in the United States to achieve Magnet designation.
