PHILADELPHIA (May 10, 2015)—Faculty and staff, volunteers, patients, survivors, and their families will come together as members of the Fox Chase Cancer Center/Temple Health team at Susan G. Komen Philadelphia’s 25th Annual Race for the Cure on Mother’s Day—Sunday, May 10, 2015.
The family-friendly 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun walk, which will take place at Eakins Oval and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, helps raise funds for breast cancer research, community grants, and educational and outreach initiatives through Susan G. Komen Philadelphia. The event will begin with opening ceremonies at 7 am, including the Survivors Parade of Pink, followed by race activities at 8:15 am.
“What is remarkable about this day is the ability to look down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and actually see – actually feel – the number of people that this disease has touched,” said Fox Chase breast cancer surgeon Richard J. Bleicher, MD, FACS, who serves as co-captain of the Fox Chase team along with Bonnie Miller, Administrative Director of Fox Chase’s Women’s Cancer Center.
“Collectively there are ‘teams’ everywhere; groups of people banded together to voice concern or support louder than any of them could do individually–and we at Fox Chase are so proud to join with others in our community to take part in this important effort,” Bleicher said.
The Women’s Cancer Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center, which opened in summer 2009, as the Philadelphia region’s first facility of its kind, builds on Fox Chase’s longstanding history of world-renowned expertise in breast and gynecologic cancers. Its offerings reflect Fox Chase’s comprehensive approach with both clinical and research programs spanning the continuum of care from risk assessment, screening and diagnostics to treatment, support, and survivorship. In addition, the Center offers therapies available only through clinical trials at Fox Chase.
“Fox Chase has a long and proud association with Susan G. Komen Philadelphia, not only joining with the nonprofit each year at Race for the Cure, but also as the recipient of grant funding for cancer research and community outreach efforts, as well as awards recognizing the work of our outstanding breast cancer treatment team,” said Miller.
